In 2016, Chris Camplin thought he was onto something good by doing a cleanse using a powdered smoothie mix with a long list of supplements in it. “In hindsight, I got a little bit crazy and put a bunch of things in my body that I probably shouldn't have,” says Camplin. A few days into his smoothie diet, Chris noticed a rash that spread from head to toe. "I broke out in hives, what I called modern-day leprosy. My entire body was covered,” he says. Chris quickly recognized that he was probably reacting to the ingredients in the smoothie mix. He saw his doctor and was prescribed steroids. “It was the typical steroid pack. When I was on it, I was fine. And then, as soon as I came off the steroids, boom, it came back,” says Camplin. He returned to the doctor, where he was given more potent steroids. “And sure enough, as soon as the steroids were done, boom, it was back again.” Jen Neville experienced chronic acne as a teenager and throughout college. By her early 20s, she had tried every treatment on the market. Jen was a ferocious fighter, but her heart sank when she began seeing new pimples the size of marbles. Nothing seemed to work. “The acne was like a signal that something wasn’t right,” says Jen.“Something was off balance. I felt I was failing to understand my body and what was happening.” Although she wanted to be rid of her acne, Jen wore it “loud and proud.” “I never covered the spots with makeup, foundation, or concealers,” she says. “We are culturally and socially conditioned to be ashamed or embarrassed about acne, but I object to that! I always wanted my personality and spirit to outshine the red spot.” Keith Matthews had a busy week ahead. He had facilitated an out-of-town business meeting with some influential people for his company. On the big day, Keith collided with a wall of anxiety and depression. He could barely pull himself out of bed. Steeling himself to push past the stress, Keith made it through the week. By the time he got home, however, Keith knew something had to change. His mood changes lingered, making life miserable. Keith took a leave of absence from work to focus on mental health.” Keith began treatment with traditional psychiatric medications from his physician but soon developed several side effects. Keith contacted his naturopathic doctor, Jack Weber, at the Carolina Clinic of Natural Medicine. Dr. Jack listened as Keith expressed his concerns with traditional psychiatric treatments and helped him form a plan of action to find relief. Pilot Study Under Way Exploring "Food as Medicine" for Chronic Health Conditions in Underserved Communities
Seven North Carolinians are nearly halfway through nine weeks of virtual nutrition education sessions, empowering them to use dietary change, whole foods, and supplementation to improve their health naturally. The sessions
are part of a 16-week scientific research study called “Food as Medicine," co-funded by the Institute for Natural Medicine (INM) and Standard Process. The main objective is to test the hypothesis that access to fresh, whole
foods combined with a structured nutrition plan and comprehensive nutrition education will have measurable improvements in the health outcomes of underserved populations. Learn More Naturopathic Physicians as Whole Health Specialists Joint INM & AANP White Paper
