OUR COMMITMENT

The AANP recognizes that diversity, equity and inclusion work is an ongoing commitment and takes time. The Naturopathic Diversity + Inclusion Initiative and the funds raised in 2020 are just the beginning of our joint effort with the Institute for Natural Medicine to institutionalize changes and continue building an inclusive naturopathic community, regardless of who is in leadership or on staff. This initiative will take place in strategic phases and based upon the funds available to complete the necessary work:

Phase 1: Leadership training and strategy consultation for sustainability.

Phase 2: Development of position paper to provide guidelines across the naturopathic community.

Phase 3: Development of strategic plan to continue long-term work.

Phase 4: Development of resources, courses, training, and tools to share with the broader ND community.

OUR LATEST INITIATIVE

After a year-long process of researching and interviewing potential consultants, the AANP and the INM are pleased to announce their collaboration with Tindell Consulting and Coaching, bringing the Naturopathic Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative to it’s next level of leadership training and resource development. Are you willing to share your experiences and perspectives at this critical and transformative time? If you are interested in volunteering in a focus group, please let us know by completing the Naturopathic DEI Focus Group Participation Form. Learn more here.

How Naturopathic Principles Apply to Health Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity in Medicine

In a highlighted session at the AANP 2020 Convention, Naturopathic Physicians discussed their experiences and clinical perspectives on the need for NDs to be on the front lines of addressing health disparities and creating inclusive healthcare environments. They address the current medical realities of underrepresented or marginalized patient populations, how Naturopathic Principles like ‘First Do No Harm,’ 'Treat the Cause,’ and ‘Docere’ uniquely prepare NDs to improve health outcomes for these groups, and the types of primary care experiences common to NDs that illustrate the importance of inclusion within the clinical encounter and diversity in medical research.
