The National University of Natural Medicine celebrates its 70th anniversary with a major campus move to downtown Portland.

PORTLAND, Ore. — This story comes from the Portland Business Journal, a KGW News Partner. The full story, plus pictures of the new NUNM campus, is here.

Melanie Henriksen, the president of the National University of Natural Medicine, on Friday cut a big green ribbon to officially inaugurate the 70-year-old institution’s new downtown Portland campus.

The oldest accredited naturopathic medicine school in North America, NUMN moved from its longtime home in the Lair Hill neighborhood, where it was dispersed among several buildings separated by busy streets. Now all the university’s programs will reside under one roof and have room to grow. The new campus is 182,000 square feet, up from 121,000 before.

So far, only NUNM’s academic functions are housed at 1621 S.W. First Ave., including classrooms, teaching labs, a library, student spaces, the campus store and faculty and administrative offices. The next phase, once funding is secured, will add NUNM’s primary care clinic, a Food as Medicine teaching kitchen and a clinical simulation center.

About 300 alumni, students, faculty, staff, elected officials and others gathered at the new space on Friday afternoon for tours and to celebrate both the move and NUNM’s 70th anniversary.

“We’re very proud to call downtown Portland our home,” Henriksen said. “This is not just a building opening, it’s a signal of what Portland can be when education, health care and civic leadership align.”

The process to find a new home took five years of searching, but eventually the architects turned a “boring, generic, cubicle office space into a beautiful and inviting campus,” Henriksen said.

View the original article here.

Governor DeSantis Vetoes Naturopathy Legalization Bill, Keeps Naturopathy A Felony In The State

Tallahassee, FL 26 June 2026 - Friday in Tallahassee, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis vetoed CS/SB 688. His veto keeps naturopathy, a holistic health profession, illegal in Florida as it has been since 1959.

CS/SB 688, which passed the Florida Legislature this March, removed the historic ban on the term "naturopathy," which would have allowed naturopaths and traditional naturopaths to work in the state. It would have also reinstated licensure for naturopathic doctors (NDs) — those who qualify by completing a four-year naturopathic medical school and passing a national board exam — to practice naturopathic medicine under a limited scope of practice in Florida.

The bill would have marked a notable return for the state. In 1927, Florida was one of the first states in the nation to license naturopathic doctors. In 1959, the state stopped issuing new licenses for the profession, but kept the regulation in place. With the current statute in place, practicing naturopathy or naturopathic medicine has been a class-three felony in Florida, resulting in a near total ban on the profession. The Governor’s veto ensures that the ban on naturopathy remains in place.

Representative David Smith sponsored the bill in the House, and Senator Ana Maria Rodriguez carried it in the Senate. The bill passed the Senate with a 33-3 vote, and the House with a 85-22 vote.

Proponents of the bill believed it would address Florida's growing physician shortage, remove historic regulation on natural medicine, provide greater freedom of choice in health care, and expand Floridians access to natural and alternative medicine practitioners. Many were hoping the passage of this bill would bring a big victory for health freedom. Instead, many recognize the veto as a step backwards.

Del Bigtree, Founder of the MAHA organization and longtime health freedom pioneer, said about the veto: “It’s crazy that with the MAHA mandate in DC, we still can’t decriminalize naturopathy in Florida. Natural medicine is a basic human right. We have so much work to do.”

In the letter explaining his veto, Governor DeSantis claims that licensed practitioners in other healthcare professions like physicians can use naturopathic methods - even if naturopaths and naturopathic doctors cannot work here. He also claims that Floridians already have access to natural remedies, and that the bill will create additional regulation and bureaucracy.

Driving the effort was the Florida Naturopathic Physicians Association (FNPA), founded in 1935. FNPA President Todd Robinson said: "Governor DeSantis’s rationale for vetoing CS/SB 688 is confusing. As Florida law stands after this veto, all activity related to naturopathy and naturopathic medicine remains both regulated and a felony as it has been since 1959. This bill would have removed that barrier to accessing naturopathy and opened the marketplace. It’s a baffling choice for a Governor who claims to support deregulation and health freedom.”

For more information on this issue, including a full Fact Sheet and additional Quote Sheet regarding the veto, visit the Florida Naturopathic Physicians Association website: https://fnpa.org/news.
Joint Statement from the AANMC & AANP on Executive Order to Dismantle the Department of Education

The Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges (AANMC) and the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) are aware of the recent executive order issued by President Trump to close the Department of Education and are closely monitoring the situation.

Executive Orders are not laws, and only Congress has the authority to move the Department’s authorities to other agencies, or to close the Department entirely. Attempts to make significant changes without Congressional approval are also likely to encounter multiple legal challenges. However, we recognize that the recent workforce cuts, in conjunction with potential changes to the Department of Education stemming from this executive order, could have a significant and far-reaching impact on higher education, accreditation, student funding, and professional standards.

Together, we are actively working with coalitions of industry partners and leaders across higher education to assess the implications of this action and to advocate for policies that protect the integrity of educational programs and professional accreditation standards.
Our associations will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available and as we engage with stakeholders to respond strategically to these developments.

View the official joint statement here.

INM and NOW Health Group Announce Protocol for Life Scholarship

The Institute for Natural Medicine (INM) and NOW Health Group (NHG, Bloomingdale, IL) are introducing the Protocol for Life Scholarship, an initiative named in honor of the company’s visionary founder, Elwood Richard. With a generous six-figure investment spread over five years, this scholarship marks the single largest commitment ever made to advance naturopathic residency programs, reinforcing NHG’s deep-rooted commitment to medical education and training.

According to NHG, the Protocol for Life Scholarship is designed to enhance the accessibility, sustainability and standardization of naturopathic residency training, addressing a critical need in the field. This investment will create more residency opportunities for future naturopathic doctors (NDs) while ensuring that programs maintain the highest quality standards. The flexible nature of the scholarship allows for its use across various aspects of residency training, providing essential support to programs that align with these goals.

“The Richard family was inspired by my mother, Betty Richard, who grew up very poor and received financial aid to go to college,” says Dan Richard, NHG’s vice president of global sales and marketing. “Our family is helping pay for residency education and training as a way to ‘pay it forward’ to others who also have financial needs. The important work INM does in whole-person health aligns very well with our company’s philosophy.”

Yalda Shokooh, PharmD, PhD, director of science and nutrition at NOW, shares this enthusiasm, “Supporting residency opportunities best serves people. I am very grateful for the generous donation from the Richard family and cannot wait to see the tremendous impact it will have on education.”

This scholarship comes at a pivotal moment for the naturopathic community, as residencies play a crucial role in the professional development of NDs. By expanding training opportunities and standardizing training, the Protocol for Life Scholarship addresses a growing need for highly skilled naturopathic providers in primary care, ensuring more practitioners are well-equipped to deliver effective natural and sustainable health care solutions.

For more information, visit https://naturemed.org/community-resources/inm-residency-consortium.

View the original article here.

In Memory of Wally Simons, R.Ph.

We lost a great one this summer, Wally Simons, R.Ph.

Health care pioneer in bioidentical hormone therapy , pharmacist, educator, entrepreneur, hormonal health advocate, provocateur, inventor, philantropist and much more to those who were privileged enough to work and in his circle of loved ones.

Wally Simons, the man who fought the FDA for the right for pharmacies to compound estrogen replacement therapy – and won, who helped launch the careers of dozens of young naturopathic physicians focusing on women’s health and mentored many others, whose generosity funded the first integrative medicine residency program in Portland, Oregon, whose donations to NUNM and to Sonoran University of Health Sciences epitomized the essence of philanthropy – love of humanity, who established Women’s International Pharmacy as one of the first and the largest compounding pharmacies in North America, and who attended every naturopathic conference he could cram into his busy schedule, passed away on September 5th at age 84.

In 1985, Wally founded Women’s International Pharmacy (WIP) with the goal of treating women with hormonal therapy for PMS. He started with one condition, one doctor, one preparation and one dosage strength of progesterone. Thousands of women found relief, and over the next 35 plus years, the company evolved into offering a broad array of compounded specialty products for an ever expanding need from patients and practitioners. At it’s core though, Wally and WIP was passionate about compound hormone options for women, and the rights of patients and practitioners to be able to make choices about their health care.

It was this fundamental right, his ethics, his generosity and his passion that drove Wally and developed WIP into a premier national compounding pharmacy. Faced with the prospect of working at Women’s International Pharmacy (WIP) compared to chain pharmacies and hospitals led newly minted pharmacists to deluge staff with applications to work at their locations in Madison, Wisconsin and Youngstown, Arizona. One of his long time employees, Carol Peterson, who was with Wally from the beginning of WIP in Wisconsin said: “He was an amazing colleague, so helpful to anyone and everyone. Always willing to help. He was a “fix it guy” and could get things done that no one else could get done. He was great at networking and making connections with people and connecting others. He was very personable and social."

According to a historical assessment, Wally was involved in several studies and the creation of progesterone in an oil along with colleagues. They even had a patent on progesterone in an oil for a long time until the patent ran out.

Other historical moments of note were when the FDA and state of Wisconsin Pharmacy board
came with guns a blazing. Along with a coalition of other compounding pharmacies they found
their way to the supreme court and won 5-4. It was a freedom of speech ruling - estrogen replacement therapy and menopause. There was another case involving estriol and he and a
coalition of compounding pharmacies won in the 5th circuit court. Wally stood up and fought
for patient, practitioner and compounding pharmacy rights in other legal cases as well, always
surviving the legal challenges and continuing the mission of WIP.

Dr. Tori Hudson will remember him as passionate, positive, committed, generous, great
conversationalist, and great advocate for women’s health — putting his money where his mouth was, utilizing his intellect, creativity, heart and resources to make a profound and lasting difference in the world.

Dr. Paul Mittman says: "Wally Simons's influence on the naturopathic profession, its schools and their graduates has been profound. Equally important, Wally was one of the most joyful,
positive, generous, and loving people I've ever met;"

Dr Marianne Marchese remembers Wally's infectious smile and joyful spirit. He had a kind and compassionate nature, always willing to mentor and support others. His spiritual life was a lived reality and his impact on the naturopathic profession has left a lasting legacy.

Several people who attended the memorial service described the distinctive Wally Simons left
side of the chest to the left side of the chest hugs. In other words, heart to heart.
His incredible contributions to medicine and our patient’s access to compounded hormones and compounded medications paved the path and kept the trail open to all.

Wally’s passing leaves a hole in many of our hearts. His legacy, for patients, naturopathic
medical education, the naturopathic profession, and those who received those special hugs, will last for generations to come.

Thank you Wally, you will be missed.

Tori Hudson, ND
Marianne Marchese ND

TEMPE, Ariz. – Sonoran University of Health Sciences is excited to announce it has received Title IV Financial Aid approval for students interested in enrolling in the institution’s new School of Mental Health, which will house Sonoran’s innovative and highly anticipated new Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree program. The program, now scheduled to launch in Spring 2025 so students have additional time to apply for assistance, aims to meet the urgent need for licensed mental health practitioners locally and nationwide.

“Receiving Title IV financial aid eligibility for this program is a critical milestone that enables us to support our students who are passionate about pursuing a career in mental health but may face financial barriers,” said Dr. Gena E. Kadar, dean of Sonoran University’s College of Nutrition and the new School of Mental Health. “As a testament to Sonoran University’s commitment to make high quality education accessible to a broader range of prospective learners and foster the next generation of mental health professionals, we have chosen to reschedule the launch of the program to Spring 2025 to provide students who qualify with additional time to apply for this important financial assistance.”

Title IV Federal Student Aid Programs refers to the financial aid programs for postsecondary students, authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended (Title IV, HEA) and administered by the U.S. Department of Education and listed in 34 CFR 668.1(c). In general, Title IV programs provide grant, work-study, and loan funds to students attending approved colleges or career schools.

To increase access for students nationwide, the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program has been designed for working adults, will be fully online, and can be completed in as little as two and a half years. Additionally, the program incorporates best practices in supporting adult learners, a unique Virtual Health Center Experience clinical simulation, and will differentiate graduates with training in specialized areas such as:

field-based crisis care, so they can work alongside law enforcement and other first responders to de-escalate mental health emergencies.
evidence-based integrative mental health care (e.g., nutrition, mindfulness) to empower clients, reduce costs, and enhance outcomes.
interprofessional collaboration, so they are prepared to work effectively as part of a healthcare team.

Further, to support students’ internship requirements and remove barriers to accessing mental health services for the community, no-cost clinical mental health counseling will be available to Arizonans, and most states nationwide, by leveraging Sonoran University’s Virtual Center for Personalized Health Care.

Sonoran University of Health Sciences (formerly Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine & Health Sciences) has a rich history of preparing graduates for success as healthcare leaders and practitioners. Since its inception, the university has been an innovator in the field of integrative healthcare education and practice and strives to advance the profession of, and opportunities for, every graduate.
For more information on Sonoran University and the new program, please visit www.sonoran.edu.

About Sonoran University of Health Sciences
Formerly known as Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, Sonoran University shapes a healthier future through the healing power of nature. At the AANP, we are committed to helping people access qualified providers, and also committed to finding innovative solutions to the declining health of our nation.” He added, “We invite any organization, stakeholder, and lawmaker interested in partnering to address these health crises, to join us.”

Highlights of the 39th AANP Convention include:

- A dynamic pre-conference workshop, “Impact Medicine: Building a Signature Care System in One Day,” expertly led by Dr. Meghan Walker. Topics ranged from cutting-edge research in naturopathic medicine to hands-on workshops focusing on craniosacral therapy and physical manipulation.
- The AANP hosted its first-ever Career Fair, providing a unique opportunity for NDs and ND students to connect with companies and residency sites actively seeking new hires.

An additional highlight was both the AANP Membership Meeting & the Gala Dinner Cruise where the prestigious annual awards were presented:
- Margaret “Maggi” Beeson, ND, received The Vis Award, celebrating her embodiment of the Healing Power of Nature and dedication to naturopathic principles;
- Brothers Farhang Khosh, ND & Mehdi Khosh, ND were presented with the President’s Award, bestowed by AANP President, Dr. Kasra Pournadeali, for their tenacity in getting Kansas State to regulate naturopathic medicine in 2001;
- Christa Louise, MS, PhD, executive director of the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners (NABNE) & Naturopathic Physician Licensing Examination (NPLEX), won the Champion of Naturopathic Medicine Award for her exemplary leadership, continuously improving the standards of naturopathic medical education and standardizing a national exam for licensure of naturopathic physicians;
- Daniel Rubin, ND, FABNO, received the Physician of the Year Award for his remarkable direction as a founder and developer of the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians (ONCANP) and Fellow by the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology (FABNO) and for his commitment to the future of naturopathic oncology and continued mentorship;
- Protocol for Life Balance/NOW Foods won this year’s Corporation of the Year Award for their continued commitment to helping the profession expand.

The 2025-2026 Board of Directors election results were also announced at the AANP 2024 Convention. The AANP’s commitment to ensuring that patients have access to licensed naturopathic care remains steadfast.

As the AANP 2024 Annual Convention wraps up, anticipation is already building for next year’s event. Mark your calendars for the AANP 2025 Annual Convention, set to take place July 10-12, 2025, in Palm Springs, California. Emphasizing a whole person health approach, naturopathic medicine aims not just to treat symptoms but to promote lasting health and vitality.

Naturopathic Medicine Week commemorates a Congressional resolution passed by the US Senate which acknowledges naturopathic medicine as a distinctive system of integrative healthcare, recognized by esteemed bodies such as the National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization. Senate Resolution 420, passed in 2014, commends naturopathic medicine for its attributes of safety, efficacy, and affordability in providing healthcare services. Moreover, it advocates for broader awareness among the American populace regarding naturopathic medicine and underscores the pivotal role played by naturopathic physicians in averting chronic illnesses and conditions.

Naturopathic Medicine Week is not merely a commemoration; it's an opportunity to showcase the efficacy, safety, and affordability of naturopathic medicine. By spotlighting the preventive and whole-health nature of naturopathic medicine, the week-long event encourages Americans to explore new avenues for achieving and maintaining optimal health.

“Throughout the United States, the need is urgent for a bolstered healthcare workforce, enhanced patient outcomes, and reduced healthcare expenses,” stated Laura Farr, AANP's executive director. She elaborated, “Naturopathic Medicine Week offers us a platform to highlight enhanced patient outcomes attributed to naturopathic medicine.”

In support of the White Paper Whole Health Care Specialists, jointly released by the AANP and the Institute for Natural Medicine (INM), Naturopathic Medicine Week serves as a platform to illustrate the profession's significant contributions to preventive, whole-person care. Licensed naturopathic doctors are uniquely positioned to address primary care physician shortages, healthcare disparities, and rising healthcare costs while championing patient empowerment and personalized healthcare.

Beyond awareness, Naturopathic Medicine Week fosters education. Naturopathic doctors nationwide will host events, including open houses and health fairs, to illuminate the principles and practices of naturopathic medicine. These events provide invaluable opportunities for the public to engage directly with practitioners and gain insights into transformative approaches to healthcare.

The AANP, in collaboration with the INM, spearheads a dynamic social media campaign (follow along with the hashtag #NatMedWeek2024) to amplify the message of naturopathic medicine's efficacy and accessibility. Moreover, partnering with organizations such as the Association of Accredited Medical Colleges (AANMC) and state associations ensures a collective effort to disseminate information and empower individuals to make informed healthcare choices.

For more information on naturopathic medicine and to find a licensed naturopathic doctor near you, visit the AANP's website and explore the comprehensive FAQ Series and Find a ND page.

###

About the AANP:
The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) is the professional association that represents licensed naturopathic physicians.
Naturopathic Doctors in Wisconsin Can Now Apply for Licenses but Need to Act Fast

February 9, 2024

MADISON, WI: When Governor Tony Evers signed a bill allowing licensure for naturopathic doctors (NDs) in Wisconsin in 2022, the race was on to meet a two-year implementation deadline.

“It’s a very short time frame,” says Allison Becker, ND, LAc, a member of the Naturopathic Medicine Examining Board charged with drafting the rules and regulations needed to grant licenses. “Other state boards have been in the rules-writing process for many, many years before they can get licenses out,” she adds.

Thanks to active state support, a focused and independent board, and more than a few eight-hour-long meetings, NDs can finally apply online for their licenses. Yet they too are up against the clock.

According to the law, every qualifying naturopathic doctor in Wisconsin must apply for their license by March 1, now less than a month away. “If they miss this deadline, and they’re calling themselves a naturopathic doctor and have appropriate training, they could be fined or approached by the state for practicing without a license,” says Sara Norris, ND, legislative chair of the Wisconsin Naturopathic Doctors Association. “That’s the impetus of getting this announcement out there as quickly as possible.”

Getting licenses into the hands of qualified NDs will have an immediate impact, according to Dr. Norris. “[Licenses] provide naturopathic doctors with appropriate training to be able to order labs and [opportunities] for people to get exams and really see their NDs to the full extent of their scope and training.” Dr. Norris also points out that these licenses will benefit and protect patients too. “With licensure, it allows us as a state to ensure, for patient safety, that nobody is calling themselves a doctor of naturopathic medicine or an ‘ND’ without actually having proper credentials.”

In contrast to the 15-year-long legislative process that brought naturopathic licensure to the state, the application process is quick and straightforward. Online applications are now live on license.wi.gov, with doctors primarily providing their school transcripts from a CNME–accredited four-year medical school to prove their eligibility. A grandfathering clause will also allow a limited number of existing providers who didn’t go to a CNME school to apply if they meet stringent criteria. This opportunity, however, will permanently end after the March 1 deadline. Later renewals, starting in 2025 and repeating every two years, will have more rigorous requirements, including exams about the rules they are governed by.

“I think other states can perhaps learn from what has helped us be so efficient,” says Dr. Becker. “I feel we are really doing the profession justice … we’re really laying the foundation for NDs to be able to be successful in Wisconsin.”

As for how it feels to finally give out those licenses, Dr. Becker is relishing the moment. “It’s awesome,” she says. “It’s really amazing—and a huge relief because it’s been a long time coming.”

Wisconsin becomes the 26th state to license naturopathic doctors, with active licensure initiatives ongoing in nine more. "With Wisconsin becoming the 26th US jurisdiction to regulate NDs, we have reached the halfway mark towards our top state advocacy priority. We applaud the Wisconsin Naturopathic Doctor’s Association, and Wisconsin NDs for getting the job done, and accelerating the pace towards licensing all US jurisdictions," said Dr. Kasra Pournadeali, President of AANP.

Media Contact:

Taryn Ernest
American Association of Naturopathic Physicians
202-849-6308
taryn.ernest@naturopathic.org

Pilot Study Under Way Exploring "Food as Medicine" for Chronic Health Conditions in Underserved Area

Pilot Study Under Way Exploring "Food as Medicine" for Chronic Health Conditions in Underserved Communities

For Immediate Release:
September 19, 2023

Kannapolis, NC: Seven North Carolinians are nearly halfway through nine weeks of virtual nutrition education sessions, empowering them to use dietary change, whole foods, and supplementation to improve their health naturally.

The sessions are part of a 16-week scientific research study called “Food as Medicine," co-funded by the Institute for Natural Medicine (INM) and Standard Process. The main objective is to test the hypothesis that access to fresh, whole foods combined with a structured nutrition plan and comprehensive nutrition education will have measurable improvements in the health outcomes of underserved populations.

"This is a landmark research project,” says Maurice Werness Jr., ND, a co-investigator on the study who is teaching the educational sessions. “It is the start of work that can offer the possibility of shifting how medicine is practiced in the United States and around the world.” From the importance of regulating blood sugar to choosing ideal natural food sources, the lessons of these courses are reinforced with a custom smartphone-based gamification app designed to provide measurable and quantifiable data throughout the learning process.

The participants, drawn from low-income North Carolina communities that have struggled with quality food access and high levels of chronic disease, are supplied with $900 in grocery store gift cards over the 16-week study period to support access to whole foods. They will also receive complementary nutritional supplements from Standard Process. “Our mission at Standard Process is to change people's lives, so our expectation with this project is to empower our participants through education and whole food nutrition so they can make healthy and sustainable choices to advance their health,” says lead researcher Carolina Carlisle, PhD, a Clinical Research Scientist at Standard Process and lead scientist on this project.

To track the program’s impact, all seven participants traveled to Standard Processes' Nutrition Innovation Center, where baseline vitals were taken along with a full panel of blood tests and a microbiome test. Key markers will be tested again at the study’s midpoint in October and at the conclusion of the project in early December.

"We want this data to inform new approaches of how we can help improve the health of our community members," says Michelle Simon, PhD, ND, President and CEO of the Institute for Natural Medicine. "Our current healthcare system does not do enough to incorporate diet and lifestyle interventions for chronic conditions. We're bringing root-cause medicine to the community level so people can enjoy successful health outcomes without resorting to a healthcare system that focuses on symptom management."

Outcomes of the pilot study will refine future research projects and provide the foundation for other data-driven nutrition education programs. "We hope to, with partners, build this out nationally in communities heavily burdened by chronic disease," Dr. Simon says.

It's the adage of "you are what you eat," updated with rigorous data and metrics to serve the modern issues of the twenty-first century.

About the Institute for Natural Medicine (INM)
INM is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming health care in America by promoting evidence-based natural treatments through education, access, and research.

About Standard Process
Standard Process, founded in 1929, is a multigenerational supplement manufacturer committed to advancing health through whole-food nutrition while supporting research that validates current practices and inspires innovation.

Media Contacts

Institute for Natural Medicine

Wyn Delano
Chief of Staff
wyn@naturemed.org
310-804-6661

Michelle Simon, ND, PhD
President and CEO
msimon@naturemed.org

Standard Process
Brea Nance
Clinical Research Coordinator
bnance@standardprocess.com
262-495-6410

NAEM serves as a resource and community for clinicians to learn and lead in the emerging field of environmental medicine.

The NAEM’s new president, Katherine Carvlin, ND, has been actively practicing with a focus in Environmental Medicine for many years, and has been a part of a team of like-minded doctors concerned with the impact of chemicals on patient’s health. NAEM founders, Walter Crinnion, ND, Jessica Tran, ND, and Lyn Patrick, ND, are beloved and respected pioneers in the field of Environmental Medicine. The current board met to expand on the reach and scope of work in service of the current members. Attending the retreat were board members Katherine Carvlin, ND, Corina Dunlap, ND, Kim Furtado, ND, Jan Kielman, DCNc, MS, CNS, IFMCP, RHG, Bonnie Nedrow, ND, Louise Tolzmann, ND, executive director, Kathleen Mulligan and executive assistant Cristine Ehly, ND.

The NAEM Vision Statement declares that “Our goal is to help every clinician easily access and apply fundamental and advanced environmental medicine principles to restore and improve the health of their patients.” The board surveyed its members this Spring in order to gain clarity regarding their needs for more training and utilization of the NAEM’s Clinical Guidelines on various toxins and toxicants. During the retreat, a roadmap on collaborative projects with like-minded partner organizations was created. Improved educational tools and pathways to engage new and current members were explored.

Dr. Carvlin explains, “Bringing together our volunteer team to create space for strategic planning for the next five years of our growing organization was amazing. The week-long event aims to showcase the value of naturopathic medicine to patients, prospective patients, public policy makers, reporters, and community leaders through various creative activities, events, and messages.

The origins of Naturopathic Medicine Week date back to 2013 when the US Senate unanimously passed S. Res. 221, creating the first-ever U.S. Naturopathic Medicine Week. The resolution recognizes the value of naturopathic medicine in providing “safe, effective, and affordable health care…” and encourages Americans to learn about the role of naturopathic doctors (NDs) in preventing chronic and debilitating conditions.

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care profession, emphasizing prevention, treatment, and optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and substances that encourage individuals’ inherent self-healing process. The practice of naturopathic medicine includes modern and traditional modalities, and encompasses a range of therapies, including botanical and herbal medicine, nutritional medicine, lifestyle counseling, naturopathic physical manipulation, and much more.

As AANP Executive Director Laura Farr emphasizes, “Naturopathic physicians are trained as medical specialists in lifestyle, behavioral, and preventive medicine, making them the ideal physicians to help Americans live healthier lives. Join us in celebrating the healing power of nature and a whole-person, patient-centered approach to health!”

Recent celebrations have seen Naturopathic Medicine Week moved from October to May to align with the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors (CAND) and amplify the messages of the week. The AANP collaborated with the Institute for Natural Medicine (INM) to come up with this year’s theme and messaging in the United States: "Naturopathic Medicine: Rooted in Whole Person Health."

The AANP encourages everyone to participate in Naturopathic Medicine Week 2023 and learn more about the benefits of naturopathic medicine.
