How to "Do" Niacin: The Role of Niacin in the Management of Dyslipidemia

For over 50 years, niacin (as nicotinic acid) has been used for the management of dyslipidemia. With its broad range benefits, niacin remains unique among lipid therapies. Not only does it reduce all atherogenic lipid fractions, but niacin is the most effective agent for raising HDL cholesterol. In this webinar, you’ll learn the fascinating early years of niacin, the controversy that led to its fall from favor, and why niacin remains a valuable option for patients with dyslipidemia. Finally, you’ll learn how to identify appropriate patients and administer niacin therapy for optimal results.

Upon completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Discuss the therapeutic value of nicotinic acid (NA) for treatment of dyslipidemia.
  2. Learn how to select appropriate patients for NA therapy.
  3. Identify effective NA formulations and proper dosing and administration protocols.

Joseph M. Keenan, MD is Professor Emeritus, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, University of Minnesota. Dr. Keenan is a pioneer and leading researcher in the use of nicotinic acid for the management of dyslipidemia.
