Digestive Health for the Microbiome





The course will lead through the digestive system, highlighting features of the upper GI and focusing on the microbiome of the lower GI tract. This discussion highlights highly relevant topics in microbiome studies, including GI barrier permeability, probiotics and other modifications of the gut microbiome, the GI connection to immunity and brain health, microbial balance, and dysbiosis.


Learning Objectives

    1. Discuss key features of the upper and lower GI system
    2. Understand the microbiome, including but not limited to GI permeability, prebiotics and probiotics
    3. Discuss the relationship of GI to all health systems




    Weston Bussler Ph.D. is a part of the Research and Development team at Standard Process as a Nutrition Scientist. His work involves translating novel research insights and natural product innovations into successful products and educational material for health care practitioners to support health and wellness. 

    Weston earned his B.S. in Nutrition at The University of Minnesota and continued his education at North Carolina State University where he earned a Ph.D. in Nutrition Science with an emphasis in Food and Agriculture. His research at NCSU focused on the intersection of these three disciplines where he worked to connect plants to health conditions utilizing statistical genomics.

    Weston pairs his multidisciplinary background with a passion for nutrition and health promotion.
